SPAR Austria and fuel retailer JET are launching a pilot programme to open five SPAR Express stores at JET petrol stations across Austria by the end of May, marking a new chapter in forecourt retail for the country.

The partnership aims to redefine the convenience offer at Austrian filling stations, with each store stocking around 1,500 products across a compact average retail area of 80m². The range spans fresh food, chilled snacks, drinks, and everyday essentials, with SPAR own-brand items, fruit, vegetables, meat, and freshly baked goods sold at supermarket-equivalent prices.

"We are delighted to be launching five new SPAR Express stores together with JET, a strong partner," said SPAR Austria CEO Hans K. Reisch. "At these five pilot locations, SPAR Austria and JET are demonstrating what modern shopping at petrol stations in Austria could look like in the future: fresh, fast, high-quality, and consistently tailored to customers' needs."

The store layout prioritises clear navigation, bright open spaces, and prominent fresh food sections, with natural materials and modern lighting contributing to the overall shopping environment.

The trial marks a significant step in Austria's forecourt sector, where the convenience offer has traditionally lagged behind other European markets. If the pilot performs as expected, the SPAR–JET model could set a new benchmark for in-station retail across the country.
