Toyota, Hyroad Energy deploy 40 hydrogen trucks in Southern California
Toyota will provide hydrogen fuel through its own refueling infrastructure in California.
Toyota Motor North America and Hyroad Energy will put 40 hydrogen fuel cell Class 8 commercial trucks into service in Southern California, in what ranks among the largest deployments of its kind in the United States.
Announced at ACT Expo in Las Vegas, the deal brings together the core components of a functioning hydrogen trucking ecosystem under a single commercial framework. Hyroad will supply the trucks, maintenance and fleet management software, while Toyota provides hydrogen fuel through its own refueling infrastructure, currently under development in Ontario, California.
"Accelerating the hydrogen economy requires collaboration, and Toyota is proud to work with Hyroad to move the heavy-duty sector forward," said Jason Zahorik, general manager of Toyota Hydrogen Solutions.
Each Class 8 truck can carry up to 70 kg of hydrogen and refuels in 15 to 20 minutes. Range reaches approximately 500 miles per fill, with water vapor as the only local emission.
Hyroad, which acquired 117 hydrogen fuel cell trucks and associated IP from Nikola Corporation's 2025 bankruptcy auction, operates as an OEM-agnostic provider assembling vehicles, fuel supply and software into deployable fleet solutions.
