Viva Energy, Cleanaway partner on low-carbon fuels in Australia
Partnership focuses on transforming used cooking oil into renewable fuels and materials.
Viva Energy and Cleanaway Waste Management will collaborate on the production of low-carbon liquid fuels and products at the energy company’s Geelong refinery.
The initiative highlights the potential of turning local waste into valuable energy resources, supporting both community and economic goals. Under the partnership agreement, domestic used cooking oil will be supplied from Cleanaway’s Laverton facility to the Geelong site, where it will be converted into renewable diesel and other advanced products, including biocircular polymers.
Viva Energy has already been running a pilot program at Geelong, successfully co-processing used cooking oil alongside crude oil to produce high-value fuels and materials. Scaling up this process would help close the loop between waste generation, resource recovery, and re-use.
“Australia has the expertise, technology, and local supply chains to adopt an important role in sustainable energy and circular manufacturing,” said Lachlan Pfeiffer, Chief Strategy Officer at Viva Energy. “Official recognition and support for co-processing in NGERS and the Guarantee of Origin Scheme would help build the case for investment in local recycling, clean fuel production and job creation, helping Australia retain and indeed build its sovereign manufacturing capability.”
The partnership supports national climate and transport goals, including the government’s Future Made in Australia program and Net Zero Plan, which identify low-carbon liquid fuels as key to decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors like heavy transport.
