Viva Energy opens Australia’s first hydrogen station in Geelong
New Energy Hub offers renewable hydrogen and EV charging for commercial fleets.
Viva Energy has officially opened Australia’s first publicly accessible hydrogen refueling station at its Energy Hub in Geelong, marking a milestone in the country’s transition to cleaner transport solutions.
Designed to support a fleet of hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles, the new facility positions Viva Energy at the forefront of zero-emission heavy vehicle infrastructure. Unveiled on June 11th, the Geelong site features a 2.5-megawatt electrolyser generating renewable hydrogen using recycled water.
The hub will serve a mix of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), including prime movers, buses, and refuse trucks operated by local businesses.
The station also includes fast charging for electric commercial vehicles, integrating hydrogen and battery-electric technologies to decarbonize medium and heavy-duty fleets. Diesel fuel remains available, reflecting Viva Energy’s strategy to offer a diverse mix of traditional and alternative fuels.
“By providing hydrogen as an alternative fuel, we aim to reduce emissions and help shape a more sustainable heavy transport sector in Australia. Our Energy Hub is built to support a mix of future fuels, recognizing that the path to net zero demands both innovation and flexibility,” said Lachlan Pfeiffer, Chief Strategy Officer at Viva Energy.
With additional hydrogen partners expected to join in the coming months, Viva Energy’s Geelong hub aims to become a national model for multi-fuel infrastructure, accelerating the decarbonisation of Australia’s transport sector.
