CU pilots AI-powered self-checkout monitoring solution
Convenience retailer tests computer vision technology designed to identify incomplete self-checkout transactions and improve store operations.
CU is piloting an AI-powered self-checkout monitoring system aimed at improving transaction accuracy and enhancing store operations across its convenience store network in South Korea.
Developed by Shinsegae I&C, the solution uses AI vision technology to analyze customer behavior at self-checkout kiosks and detect situations where items have been scanned but payment has not been completed. When an incomplete transaction is identified, the system displays an on-screen message prompting the customer to finalize payment before leaving the checkout area.
BGF Retail, the operator of CU, is currently testing the technology at a store in the Gangnam area of Seoul. The companies plan to expand the deployment to additional locations starting in September.
According to the companies, the solution is designed to reduce payment omissions resulting from customer error while improving the stability of self-checkout operations. Beyond payment management, the pilot is also expected to generate insights into customer traffic patterns, dwell times and queue management to support operational improvements.
The initiative is part of CU’s broader efforts to incorporate AI into retail operations. The companies said future areas of collaboration could include inventory management and shelf monitoring, supporting the development of more automated and data-driven convenience stores.
