Lawson to let travelers sleep in c-store parking with first RV park pilot in Japan

Six locations in Chiba Prefecture to host overnight car stay facilities.

In a first for Japan’s convenience store industry, Lawson has announced a pilot project to introduce “RV Parks” at six of its stores in Chiba Prefecture, starting July 14, 2025.

Developed in collaboration with the Japan RV Association and Glory Ltd., the initiative aims to meet growing demand for car-based overnight travel while offering a safe, convenient place for travelers to rest. With rising hotel prices and growing interest in flexible travel, vehicle-based overnight stays in minivans and compact cars have surged in popularity. Meanwhile, the number of registered RVs in Japan continues to climb, reaching 165,000 in 2024 according to the Japan RV Association.

However, safe and legal places to sleep in vehicles remain limited. Lawson sees an opportunity to provide a reliable alternative by using its existing store network.

The RV Parks designated for this pilot meet the standards set by the Japan RV Association for safe and comfortable overnight stays. These include 24-hour restroom access and proper waste disposal. As of December 2024, more than 500 certified RV Parks exist nationwide, often located near hot springs, hotels, roadside stations, and amusement parks.

The pilot program will run from July 14, 2025, through June 30, 2026, with overnight stays priced between ¥2,500 and ¥3,000 per vehicle (approximately $16 to $19). Guests can check in starting at 6:00 p.m. and are required to check out by 9:00 a.m. the following morning.

Lawson’s goal is to expand overnight car stay options using its national store network, while also making efficient use of parking spaces. The company hopes to contribute to the growing “car travel” trend by offering a new, safe, and comfortable experience for road travelers.
