Lekkerland pilots alternative fuel trucks in logistics operations
Company trials hydrogen, electric and biogas vehicles in Germany to evaluate alternatives for distribution operations.
Lekkerland has launched pilot projects to test hydrogen, electric and biogas-powered trucks in real-world logistics operations, as part of a broader strategy to develop a future-ready fleet. The trials, taking place across multiple locations in Germany, aim to assess the performance and suitability of different technologies in daily distribution activities.
The company is taking a technology-neutral approach, reflecting uncertainty around which solutions will dominate the long term. “It remains to be seen which technologies will ultimately prevail. That is why we are testing various options,” said Peter Blömer, Head of Transport Operations at Lekkerland.
In Hamburg, the company has been operating a hydrogen-powered truck since late 2025. The vehicle, equipped with three fuel cells, offers a range of around 240 kilometers and is designed for urban deliveries, including improved driver visibility and ergonomics.
Complementing this, a biogas truck has been in use in Cologne since October 2024, supporting standard delivery routes and allowing refueling at service stations served during operations. The company also deployed an electric van in Oberhausen in 2025, optimized for lighter logistics tasks without requiring mid-route charging.
Most recently, an electric heavy-duty truck has entered testing in Cologne, featuring a high-capacity battery designed to support longer-range operations under ideal conditions.
