Viva Energy’s Geelong upgrade delivers cleaner petrol
Ultra-low sulphur fuel sets new standards for emissions and health in Australia.
Viva Energy has commissioned its Ultra-Low Sulphur Gasoline (ULSG) plant at the Geelong refinery, marking a major step toward cleaner fuels in Australia. The $400 million upgrade, supported by a $150 million contribution from the Australian Government, introduces petrol with a maximum of 10 parts per million sulphur, reducing harmful emissions and improving air quality.
The new standards allow Australia to import vehicles with the latest internal combustion technology. “Australians deserve cleaner fuels that protect their health and keep our economy moving,” said Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen. “By backing Viva Energy’s refinery in Geelong we are supporting local jobs, locking in fuel security here at home, and cutting harmful pollution.”

More than 300 workers contributed to the 27-month project, boosting the local economy. The plant uses advanced desulphurisation technology found in 300 refineries worldwide, converting removed sulphur into fertiliser for Australian agriculture.
Viva Energy CEO Scott Wyatt highlighted the milestone: “This investment not only keeps local manufacturing thriving but also enables us to produce the cleanest petrol we’ve ever manufactured in Australia.” The upgrade reinforces Viva Energy’s commitment to energy security and a cleaner future.
