Parkland to build the ‘electric charging destination of the future’
Canada’s Parkland will build the winning concept of Electric Autonomy Canada’s international design competition for an EV charging hub.
Canadian fuel and convenience retailer Parkland Corporation has announced plans to build the ‘Electric Charging Destination of the Future’ with an innovative design. Parkland has developed its initial architectural concept by sponsoring an international design competition operated by Electric Autonomy Canada.
The competition called for inspiring concepts that could serve as a blueprint for what future fuelling stations dedicated to EV charging could look like. Judges looked at over 100 entries from across the world.
The winning entrants from the competition include: in first place 'More with Less', designed by James Silvester from Edinburgh, Scotland. In second place is 'The Circle' by Fabric.a Architects from Istanbul, Turkey, and in third place is 'Plug and Play' by Pavel Babiienko from Berlin, Germany.
“We are committed to bringing the winning concept to life as part of our ambitious EV charging strategy in British Columbia and believe the concept could be extended to our other geographies when we see opportunity to meet emerging customer demand,” said Darren Smart, SVP Energy Transition and Corporate Development.
The winning design from Scotland creates a relaxing environment, where electric vehicle drivers can take a breath, and recharge not just their vehicles, but themselves.
“The environmentally friendly materials and modular nature of the ‘More with Less’ concept, provides tremendous versatility. It can be scaled large or small, accommodate the amenities we know EV customers value while they charge, such as our ON the RUN convenience stores and high-quality dining. It also creates a series of outdoor spaces. The result is a destination that customers can enjoy and an environment where nature is integral to the structure,” added Smart.
Parkland plans to bring the winning concept to life as part of their ambitious electric vehicle charging strategy in British Columbia, Canada. Some of these are co-located with ON the RUN branded convenience stores and Triple O’s restaurants on high-traffic routes through British Columbia and into Calgary.
