7-Eleven has left India after Reliance Retail, its master franchisee in the country, closed all 31 remaining stores in Mumbai and Pune.

The convenience chain entered the market through a licensing agreement with Reliance and opened its first store in Mumbai in October 2021. As reported by The Free Press Journal, the network grew to around 60 outlets at its peak before it began to shrink.

Parent company Seven & i Holdings said it still aspires to serve Indian consumers as it is open to exploring different options to develop its presence in the country over the longer term.

Meanwhile, Lawson, another Japanese convenience chain, reportedly plans to open its first store in India in 2027 and reach around 100 outlets by 2030.
