ABB and Ampol launch Australia’s first ultra fast 400kW chargers
Installation is part of a dedicated drive through hub designed to for electric trucks and larger vehicles towing trailers.
ABB and Ampol have unveiled Australia’s first A400 ultra‑fast electric vehicle chargers at an Ampol site on Sydney’s M4 Motorway, marking a significant step in the country’s charging infrastructure expansion.
The installation forms part of a wider rollout of 10 EV charging bays at the site, including a dedicated drive‑through hub designed to accommodate electric trucks and larger vehicles towing trailers. The A400 units deliver up to 400kW of power.
Ampol will complement the chargers with ABB’s Energy Management solution, which uses a Terra Gateway Pro controller and digital monitoring tools to enable real‑time oversight and dynamic power distribution. The Eastern Creek location becomes the first in Australia to integrate 400kW charging with ABB’s advanced energy‑management capabilities.
At the opening ceremony, attended by Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen, executives from both companies stressed the importance of ultra‑fast charging for Australia’s transition to cleaner transport.
Sean Stove, ABB’s E‑Mobility Division Manager for APAC, said the chargers “represent the future of EV charging, particularly for heavy vehicles,” noting ABB’s role in accelerating national electrification.
Ampol’s General Manager of Energy Value Chain, Patrick Luxton, said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to “powering better journeys” as customer needs evolve through the energy transition.
