Aral opens pilot truck stop with AI parking and EV charging
The new site in Northeim combines smart parking, foodservice, alternative fuels and ultra-fast charging as part of a broader mobility hub strategy.
Aral has opened a pilot truck stop in Northeim, Germany, introducing a new site format that combines digital parking management, convenience retail, alternative fuels and electric vehicle (EV) charging at a key logistics location along the A7 motorway.
The redeveloped facility was completed in four months and includes a newly built 250 m2 REWE To Go store, a truck driver lounge and fully modernized sanitary facilities. The site is designed to serve truck drivers, commuters and long-distance travelers through an integrated mobility and convenience offering.
A central feature of the project is an AI-powered parking management system that enables barrier-free parking through license plate recognition. The truck stop offers 104 truck parking spaces and 48 car parking spaces, including 10 short-stay spots. Truck drivers receive parking vouchers that can be redeemed for food and beverages inside the store.
The REWE To Go outlet, developed in partnership with Lekkerland, offers fresh meals, snacks, barista-style coffee and a range of grab-and-go products. The site also includes Aral HVO, a lower-emission alternative to conventional diesel, as well as AdBlue and car wash services.
For e-mobility, the location features four Aral pulse ultra-fast charging units with a total of eight charging points and power output of up to 300 kW. A second development phase is planned for 2027 and will include megawatt charging infrastructure for electric trucks, with charging capacities of up to 1,000 kW.
Aral said the Northeim project serves as a testbed for future mobility hub concepts and the modernization of its network of approximately 100 truck stop locations across Germany. A second pilot site is already being planned in Schwarmstedt.
The company currently operates around 2,400 fuel stations in Germany, alongside more than 4,000 EV charging points under its Aral pulse brand and approximately 900 REWE To Go stores.
