Asda upgrades online grocery platform
Partnership with Ocado aims to boost delivery efficiency and improve digital shopping experience from 2027.
Asda has announced a partnership with Ocado Group to enhance its online grocery operations in the United Kingdom, with upgrades set to begin in 2027. The retailer, which processes more than 700,000 online grocery orders weekly, will deploy Ocado’s Smart Platform across its website, mobile app, in-store picking and last-mile delivery network to improve service reliability and efficiency.
The first phase will focus on modernizing Asda’s digital channels, introducing a more stable platform with improved search functionality, tailored product recommendations and a simplified checkout process. The company aims to streamline the user experience for millions of customers who shop online each year.
Subsequent phases will address in-store fulfilment and delivery logistics. Ocado’s technology is already deployed in more than 1,000 grocery stores globally, with its platform supporting around 70 million orders annually. The collaboration reflects a broader trend among retailers seeking to upgrade e-commerce infrastructure to meet rising demand for faster and more reliable grocery delivery.
Allan Leighton, Asda’s Executive Chairman, said: “We know that continued success in this highly competitive market is dependent on providing a positive experience for customers every time they shop.” He added: “Partnering with Ocado, will strengthen our online offer and provide a consistent and high-quality experience for millions of shoppers, from order through to delivery, while supporting our Formula for Growth.”
Under the agreement, Asda will retain control over pricing, customer proposition and online operations. Orders will continue to be fulfilled from its stores and dedicated hubs, while rapid delivery partners will handle last-mile distribution using their own networks.
