Carrefour pilots revamped urban store concept with “City Renew” in Paris
City Renew marks the first major redesign of its local store model in seven years.
Carrefour has launched a new version of its Carrefour City convenience store format, introducing a refreshed concept called “City Renew” in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. This marks the first major redesign of its local store model in seven years and reflects the retailer’s push to better meet the expectations of urban consumers seeking convenience, sustainability, and improved in-store experiences.
The new format emphasizes a warmer, more open design, using calming green tones, light wood, and the removal of false ceilings to create a sense of space and natural light. A restructured layout prioritizes visibility and efficiency, with fresh produce displayed at the entrance, a repositioned bakery, and an expanded snacking offer that includes new items like donuts and a wider selection of breads.
City Renew is being tested not only in Paris but will soon be rolled out to cities like Lille and Grenoble. Carrefour expects to open four to five more pilot stores in the coming months. These test locations will serve as learning grounds for further improvements, helping tailor the concept to the specific needs of each local community.
This redesign comes at a time when neighborhood stores are gaining popularity in France, with consumers increasingly valuing proximity retail that balances speed, quality, and environmental awareness. Through City Renew, Carrefour aims to modernize its convenience offer and strengthen its role in shaping the future of local retail.
