Carrefour's iconic chicken launches Europe’s first food blockchain
French retailer Carrefour has tapped blockchain technology to improve transparency and traceability of its products.
Considered as Europe’s first food blockchain, Carrefour is already using the technology in France with one of its iconic animal product lines: free-range Carrefour Quality Line Auvergne chicken, one million of which are sold every year.
It will be rolled out to eight more animal and vegetable product lines, such as eggs, cheese, milk, oranges, tomatoes, salmon, and ground beef steak before the end of 2018, according to a company release.
Blockchain, a secure digital database, will allow producers or breeders to showcase what they produce and their expertise, and will provide consumers more information about a product including dates, GMO-free, feed used, places reared and slaughtered, and potential treatments used.
All these information can be accessed by scanning the QR code on the product label using a smartphone.
“Become the leader of the food transition for everyone is the aim that Alexandre Bompard has set for the Carrefour group. Making use of blockchain technology is an exemplary step in meeting this aim,” said Laurent Vallée, Carrefour's general secretary and head of quality and food safety.
