Certa supports Tesco Ireland’s shift to lower‑carbon delivery fleet
Rollout of HVO fuel enables emissions reduction across home delivery vehicles, with expansion planned nationwide.
Certa Ireland is supporting Tesco Ireland’s transition to lower‑carbon logistics through the rollout of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) across its home delivery fleet. The initiative has already seen 164 vans switch from diesel to the renewable fuel, enabling immediate emissions reductions without requiring vehicle modifications.
The move means more than one third of Tesco Ireland’s delivery fleet now operates on lower‑carbon fuel, with around 20,000 weekly customer deliveries carried out using HVO-powered vehicles. The retailer plans to expand this share to 50% of its fleet by the end of the year, extending the deployment to approximately 200 vehicles.
Certa is supplying HVO through its growing network of refuelling stations, currently supporting Tesco operations across 15 locations in Ireland, with further expansion planned.
“Transitioning more than 160 of our delivery vans to HVO is delivering strong results, and we plan to grow that to 200 vehicles by year end,” said Paul Healy, Retail Operations Director at Tesco Ireland. “Switching to HVO allows us to reduce emissions today while longer-term solutions continue to develop.”
The initiative aligns with Tesco Ireland’s target to reach net zero emissions in its own operations by 2035, while demonstrating how large fleets can implement scalable measures to reduce their environmental impact in the short term.
