China welcomes its largest ammonia-to-hydrogen refueling station
New Foshan facility by Zijin Hydrogen targets up to 40% cost reduction for hydrogen fuel.
FZU Zijin Hydrogen Power, a subsidiary of Zijin Mining, has launched China’s largest commercial ammonia-to-hydrogen refueling station in the Nanhai District of Foshan, Guangdong Province.
The facility, capable of producing and dispensing 1,000 kilograms of hydrogen per day, is the country’s first commercial station of this scale to use ammonia-based hydrogen production. According to the company, the site can cut hydrogen costs by around 40% compared with conventional production and supply methods.
Instead of transporting compressed hydrogen by tube trailers, the station employs direct liquid ammonia supply, producing hydrogen on-site and delivering it immediately for vehicle refueling. FZU Zijin says this model addresses key pain points in the hydrogen value chain, including high logistics costs and inefficiencies in transport and storage.
At the core of the system is the company’s proprietary technology, which uses low-temperature catalysts, new reactor designs and optimized processes to achieve an ammonia decomposition rate of more than 99.5% at temperatures below 480°C.
FZU Zijin claims its end-to-end solution, covering hydrogen production, storage, transport and refueling; can reduce hydrogen costs for end-users by 40–50% versus traditional approaches. With its 1,000 kg/day capacity, the Foshan station can supply fuel for up to 100 hydrogen-powered vehicles per day, offering a scalable template for future ammonia-to-hydrogen projects.
