Coordinated bomb attacks hit 11 petrol stations in Southern Thailand
“Malicious actors” tried to disrupt multiple petrol stations across the three provinces.
A series of coordinated bomb attacks ignited 11 petrol stations across Thailand’s southern border provinces in the early hours of January 11, marking one of the most widespread incidents of recent years in the long‑unsettled region.
Authorities confirmed that multiple explosive devices detonated within a 40‑minute window after midnight, striking facilities in Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala, reported Manila Times.
Officials have not identified suspects, though the attacks occurred in an area deeply affected by a low‑level insurgency that has persisted since 2004 and claimed thousands of lives. Most or all stations were PTT branded, Thailand’s state‑owned national energy company.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul suggested the bombings may have been timed as a “signal” ahead of local administrative elections rather than an escalation of insurgent activity.
