Dollar General to open 450 new stores amid rising sales

The discount retailer revealed the expansion during its third-quarter earnings report last week.

Dollar General plans to open roughly 450 new stores across the United States in 2026, signaling confidence in its growth strategy despite recent portfolio reviews that led to nearly 100 closures earlier this year. The discount retailer, which operates nearly 21,000 locations in the U.S., revealed the expansion during its third-quarter earnings report last week.

Net sales rose nearly 5% year-on-year through the third quarter of fiscal 2025, driven by increased foot traffic and improved profit margins. CEO Todd Vasos said the company is “especially pleased with the continued progress” on key initiatives, including remodeling thousands of stores under “Project Renovate” and “Project Elevate.” Over the last quarter alone, Dollar General opened 196 new stores, remodeled more than 1,100, and relocated eight.

The new stores, Vasos noted, will primarily serve rural communities and feature larger footprints with expanded cooler space and more health and beauty products. The retailer also expects to relocate nearly two dozen stores next year.

The announcement came as U.S. consumer sentiment improved slightly, according to the University of Michigan’s latest index.
