EnBW opens flagship fast-charging hub in Karlsruhe
The new site introduces charging technology of up to 480 kW, combines sustainability-focused construction with customer amenities, and serves both local EV drivers and long-distance travelers.
EnBW has inaugurated a new flagship fast-charging hub at its headquarters in Karlsruhe, Germany, introducing next-generation charging technology and a new site concept that the company plans to use as a reference for future public charging developments.
Located at the intersection of Gerwigstraße and Ostring, the charging park combines ultra-fast charging, sustainable construction practices and facilities designed to improve the charging experience. According to EnBW, the site serves as both a public charging location and a testing ground for technologies that may later be deployed across its nationwide network.
The facility currently features 12 high-power charging points, with capacity to expand to 20 in the future. EnBW has deployed charging technology from XCharge capable of delivering up to 480 kW. Depending on the vehicle, drivers can add up to 640 kilometers of range in approximately 20 minutes. The system also supports power sharing, enabling two vehicles to charge simultaneously while optimizing charging performance.
Beyond charging infrastructure, the site includes a dedicated waiting area with seating, automated restrooms, and vending machines offering drinks, snacks and coffee. A pizza vending machine is also expected to be added. The location near Karlsruhe's city center and major transport corridors, including the A5 and A8 motorways, is intended to serve both everyday motorists and long-distance travelers.
Sustainability was a key component of the project's development. EnBW said the charging park was built using electric and alternative-fuel-powered construction equipment, supported by an on-site solar and battery storage system. According to construction partner Leonhard Weiss, these measures reduced CO₂ emissions by up to 50 tonnes compared with conventional construction methods. The site also features a wooden canopy built from sustainably certified timber and operates entirely on renewable electricity.
The opening is part of EnBW's broader expansion of Germany's fast-charging infrastructure, where the company currently operates more than 9,000 charging points nationwide.
