EnBW, REWE Group open 400th joint charging site in Germany
Customers benefit from convenient EV charging while shopping as partnership accelerates nationwide charging infrastructure rollout.
REWE Group and EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG (EnBW) celebrated the opening of their 400th joint fast-charging site for electric vehicles (EV), located at a PENNY supermarket in Essen-Kray.
The milestone site features eight high-power charging (HPC) points with charging capacities of up to 400 kW, enabling EVs to gain up to 400 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes, depending on the model. The store itself also reflects a strong sustainability focus, with a modern wood-look façade that aligns with PENNY’s environmental values.
“Retail plays a crucial role in the mobility transition,” said Telerik Schischmanow, CFO of REWE Group. “Together with EnBW, we’re promoting sustainable mobility right on the parking lots of our REWE and PENNY stores. This is an excellent example of cross-industry cooperation, while also strengthening our sustainability strategy through consistent emissions reduction.”
REWE Group (including REWE and PENNY) and EnBW launched their first joint charging site in October 2022. Less than three years later, the number has grown to 400 locations, offering nearly 1,800 HPC charging points, roughly a quarter of all fast-charging points EnBW currently operates in Germany.
Volker Rimpler, CTO of EnBW mobility+, emphasized the importance of customer convenience: “Drivers want to rely on finding fast-charging infrastructure where they already stop. Our cross-industry collaboration makes that possible — your EV charges while you shop.”
Building on their success, the partners announced an expansion of their collaboration at the end of last year. The new agreement aims to establish up to 1,000 joint fast-charging sites by 2030, further accelerating the nationwide rollout of charging infrastructure.
