Galp triples ultrafast EV charging on Portugal’s A2 motorway
Portuguese operator is aiming to install eight hubs and 96 ultrafast plugs by the end of the first quarter of 2026.
Galp has tripled the number of ultrafast charging plugs at two A2 motorway service areas, installing four new hubs at Alcácer do Sal and Aljustrel and lifting capacity from 16 to 48. The company says the chargers can deliver up to 400kW, targeting shorter stops on one of Portugal’s busiest north–south routes.
The A2 expansion is positioned as the first step in a broader rollout on the A1 and A2, with Galp aiming to install eight hubs and 96 ultrafast plugs by the end of the first quarter of 2026. Once complete, it expects a combined installed capacity of 20MW across the two motorways. Galp says the build-out also supports Portugal’s obligations under EU AFIR rules for major corridors.
David Álvaro, who leads Galp’s mobility business, said the project is designed to make charging “fast, convenient and safe” on longer trips, where range anxiety is most acute. Alongside more plugs and higher power, the hubs include shelter, night lighting, automatic payment terminals and layouts intended to improve access for people with reduced mobility.
Charging speeds will vary by vehicle and battery conditions, but Galp says some drivers could regain usable charge in under 20 minutes on models able to take higher power.
Galp says it has been expanding its Iberian charging network quickly, reporting about 8,500 plugs across Portugal and Spain by the end of the third quarter of 2025, with roughly 20% rated fast or ultrafast.
