Morrisons pilots grocery lockers in UK supermarket first
The retailer is testing StrongPoint's multi-temperature Click & Collect lockers at its Skipton store, extending collection times by two hours daily and removing waits for staff.
Morrisons is the first UK supermarket to introduce StrongPoint's Click & Collect grocery lockers. It is piloting the technology at its store in Skipton, North Yorkshire, where the system now handles all Click & Collect orders and allows same-day collection. The lockers have been used across Europe for more than a decade.
Orders are loaded into the lockers in advance, and customers open them with a six-digit code, so they no longer wait for colleagues to bring shopping to their cars. Collection hours at the store have been extended by two hours a day.
The units work at several temperatures. Large compartments hold up to three bags, while smaller chilled and frozen ones take one or two. Ambient sections are kept at 16°C, chilled ones at 3–5°C and frozen ones between -18°C and -20°C. Larger orders are spread across several doors.
"We know customers want Click & Collect to be quick, convenient and flexible, and our new locker solution is designed to be exactly that," said Charlotte Exell, Group Online Director at Morrisons. "By bringing StrongPoint's proven technology to our stores, we can offer more collection slots while removing the wait for colleagues to bring orders to customers' cars."
Customers can press a "Help" button to reach staff in real time through VoCoVo communication technology. When an order includes age-restricted items, colleagues get an alert on their headsets so they can check ID in line with the Challenge 25 policy.
