OMV Petrom completes EV charging corridor across three countries
The EU-backed initiative adds 384 charging points in Romania, Hungary and Slovakia, strengthening e-mobility along a key Central European route.
OMV Petrom has completed an European Union-supported project to expand EV charging infrastructure across Central and Eastern Europe, installing 384 charging points along the TEN-T transport corridor connecting Bratislava, Budapest, Oradea and Cluj-Napoca.
The project, implemented with support from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), aims to improve cross-border e-mobility and accelerate the development of alternative fuel infrastructure along one of the region’s key transport routes.
The network includes 304 charging points at 74 locations in Romania, 28 charging points at seven sites in Hungary and 52 charging points at 11 locations in Slovakia. The deployment focuses on strategic locations along major transport corridors, including cities such as Timișoara, Constanța, Suceava and Giurgiu.
“We have rapidly scaled up our network, from about 120 charging points in 2022 to around 1,500 today across the region,” said Radu Căprău, member of the OMV Petrom Executive Board responsible for Refining and Marketing. He added that the project strengthens a major transit corridor and helps make electric mobility a more practical option for drivers.
The project was valued at approximately €40 million at the time of contracting, with up to €12 million provided through European Union grants for the Romanian portion of the initiative.
The deployment supports the EU's objective of creating an interoperable charging network along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), enabling easier long-distance EV travel between countries while contributing to transport decarbonization goals.
