Pertamina, HyET launch geothermal hydrogen and e-fuels pilot in Indonesia

Pertamina said the technologies could position Indonesia as a competitive hub for synthetic fuels in Southeast Asia.

Indonesia’s Pertamina NRE has partnered with Dutch firm HyET Clean Energy Solutions to pilot green hydrogen and e-fuel production using geothermal energy, in a move aimed at decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors.

The 1MW pilot project, set for Pertamina’s Kamojang geothermal site, will deploy HyET’s proton-conducting solid oxide electrolysis (p-SOEC) to convert steam into green hydrogen. A single-step CO₂ electrolysis process will also transform geothermal CO₂ into carbon monoxide using renewable electricity.

These components will be combined to produce e-fuels such as e-methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF), offering cleaner alternatives for aviation, shipping, and heavy industry. Pertamina said the technologies could position Indonesia as a competitive hub for green chemicals and synthetic fuels in Southeast Asia.

The pilot will run through 2026, generating technical and financial data to support scaling to a 10MW e-chemicals facility. Dutch impact investor Invest International has issued a letter of intent to back the venture.

If successful, the project could accelerate Indonesia’s energy transition and strengthen its role in the global hydrogen and e-fuels market.
