Trafigura and Tether explore stablecoin fuel payments in El Salvador

Pilot with Puma Energy could enable USDT payments at the pump, reflecting growing interest in crypto-based retail transactions.

Trafigura and Tether, issuer of the USDT stablecoin, are exploring a pilot project to enable fuel payments using USDT at Puma Energy service stations in El Salvador. The initiative, currently in an early exploratory stage, would allow customers to pay for fuel and in-store purchases using digital currency, subject to regulatory approval.

The proposed system would let users pay in USDT, with transactions converted into US dollars through an intermediary before reaching Puma Energy. This approach aims to streamline payments, reducing reliance on traditional banking systems and minimizing transaction delays, as reported by Bloomberg.

If implemented, the collaboration would mark the first known partnership between a major commodity trader and a stablecoin issuer in the fuel retail sector. It reflects a broader trend of integrating digital assets into everyday transactions, particularly in markets open to alternative financial systems.

El Salvador provides a unique testing ground for such initiatives, having adopted Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021 and positioning itself at the forefront of cryptocurrency adoption. The potential rollout of USDT-based payments at fuel stations could expand the use of digital currencies in daily commerce, especially in high-frequency retail environments.
