Viva Energy, Origin team up on bio-LPG development

Partnership explores renewable LPG production at Geelong refinery to support Australia’s energy transition.

Viva Energy and Origin Energy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop a proof of concept for producing bio-LPG at Viva Energy’s Geelong refinery. The initiative aims to create a lower-carbon alternative to conventional LPG, marking a significant step in Australia’s clean energy transition.

If successful, the project would see Viva Energy manufacture bio-LPG using locally sourced feedstocks such as used cooking oil, while Origin Energy would distribute the product to its customers. The collaboration will focus on building a viable supply chain, transparent pricing models, and advocating for carbon accounting frameworks to support commercialization.

“It’s a tangible demonstration of our commitment to a sustainable energy future,” said Lachlan Pfeiffer, Chief Strategy Officer at Viva Energy.

“We see the development of bio-LPG as a real opportunity to support our ambition to lead the energy transition through cleaner energy and customer solutions,” added Amber Fennell, General Manager LPG at Origin Energy.

Both companies have a long-standing LPG supply relationship and see bio-LPG as an opportunity to help customers reduce emissions without changing existing infrastructure.

The partnership underscores industry efforts to innovate and support Australia’s decarbonization goals, leveraging existing assets and expertise to accelerate the shift toward renewable fuels.
