117 EV chargers to rise at Tank & Rast service stations in Germany

A network of rapid-charging stations is set to expand in German motorways after ABB, a Swedish-Swiss robotics and technology firm, signed a deal with electric utilities company EnBW.

The installation of 117 electric vehicle (EV) chargers at Tank & Rast service stations is expected to be completed by the end of 2017, according to a company release.

The EV chargers have a charging capacity of 50 kilowatts each, can recharge vehicles in 30 minutes, and are connected to the Internet via a cloud solution, enabling cashless payments, among other things.

This latest supply agreement follows last year’s EnBW orders for 68 EV chargers from ABB.

"This is why we are delighted that EnBW has once again chosen our technically advanced products in this forward-looking project. The need to rapidly expand the charging infrastructure network has once again been shown during this year’s International Motor Show in Frankfurt, where nearly all automotive companies have announced a massive expansion of their electric vehicle ranges,” said ABB CEO Ulrich Spiesshofer.
