Allego rolls out overnight Smart Charging in the Netherlands
Over 4,500 EV charging points across the country now shift demand away from evening peaks through incentives for drivers.
Allego has launched overnight Smart Charging across 4,500 public electric vehicle (EV) charging points in the Netherlands, aiming to reduce peak energy demand by encouraging drivers to charge at lower-demand hours. The initiative uses grid-aware technology developed by Deftpower and targets a key challenge in public charging: balancing electricity demand as EV adoption grows.
The Smart Charging system focuses on evening and overnight sessions, when charging times are typically longer. According to the company, around 70% of energy consumption can be shifted away from peak hours without changing how drivers use the chargers.
“With Smart Charging, we are introducing a positive incentive model that rewards drivers for the flexibility they provide,” said Emiel van Steenselen, Head of Network Development Netherlands at Allego. “By focusing on overnight sessions, which are long by nature and start during the evening peak, we can shift demand to times of lower consumption without any impact on the charging experience.”
Drivers with connected vehicles can opt in from 6pm using the Allego app or participating third-party apps. Those who take part receive up to 5% of their charging costs as cashback, paid out either via bank transfer or as charging credit.
Following the rollout in the Netherlands, Allego plans to expand Smart Charging to around 9,000 charging points, including sites in Belgium.
