Since the end of August, customers of Aral have been able to buy surplus food at 650 company-owned service stations throughout Germany using the Too Good To Go app and thus save it from going to waste. Through the platform, restaurants, cafés, bakeries, supermarkets, canteens, hotels and gas stations give leftover food to self-pickers at a discount.

On the Lebensmittelretter:innen app, the fuel retailer offers unsold food from its own forecourts bakeries and bistros in a surprise bag at a price of 3.50 euros - with triple the value of the goods. Customers can reserve, pay for, and finally pick up the bags beforehand via the app during a specified period. The exact contents of the bags remain a surprise until they are picked up - depending on what is left over at the end of the day.

"The Too Good To Go app is a great way to reduce food waste at our service stations. The concept works - delicious food is no longer thrown away, while at the same time we conserve valuable resources. During the pilot phase, users bought 94 percent of all the bags on offer, collected them on time, and gave our offer in the app an above-average rating," explained Mechthild Menke, Head of Store Business at Aral.

In the future, all 1,200 company-owned Aral service stations will participate in Too Good To Go. Partner-owned Aral service stations can also cooperate independently with the platform, so the network can grow even further.

"We are delighted that Aral is joining forces with us to promote food rescue. This will enable us to save even more food from being thrown away unnecessarily. In Germany alone, more than eight million people use the app and have saved over 17 million food portions," said Wolf Hennen, Managing Director of Too Good To Go Germany.
