Aviation fuel pollution settlement in California over lead in Avgas
Suppliers of aviation fuel recently settled a lawsuit with an environmental group which was related to lead content endangering residents near a California airport, according to a report recently published in Palo Alto online.
The company will have to alert residents about the dangers of lead pollution, the report said.
While lead use in gasoline was eliminated in 1995, lead continues to be emitted by aircraft using Avgas.
Lead use in gasoline in the US was eliminated as it is toxic. Lead was used for its capacity to add octane to the gasoline mix. It was replaced by other octane adding products like ethanol or MTBE.
