bp South Africa modernizes fuel distribution and retail network
New service stations, logistics partnerships, and EV offerings reflect bp’s push for innovation and sustainability.
bp South Africa is undertaking a broad transformation initiative to modernize its service network and enhance fuel distribution across the country. As part of a nationwide upgrade launched in May 2025, the company is overhauling existing fuel stations and plans to build 40 new retail sites, according to African Energy Week.
These will include electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and a battery rental service aimed at supporting low-carbon mobility, reflecting bp South Africa’s drive to address both energy poverty and decarbonization.
To strengthen its fuel logistics capabilities, bp South Africa has partnered with global supply chain provider DP World and local firm Makwande Supply & Distribution. The agreements, signed in 2024, enable bp to outsource specialized logistics functions, improving delivery efficiency and resilience across urban and rural markets.
“As the energy landscape evolves, the company’s inclusive approach, focus on innovation, and support for women and entrepreneurs will continue playing an instrumental part in driving sustainable solutions,” said NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber.
These local efforts align with bp’s broader African strategy, which prioritizes inclusive growth and investment in key energy infrastructure. Across the continent, the company is advancing major projects such as the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim LNG development off the coasts of Senegal and Mauritania, which began producing gas in January 2025.
