C-stores from Oklahoma step closer towards selling beer and wine
Oklahoma's convenience retailers edge closer to selling strong beer and wine after a long-standing battle with state legislature.
This week the Retail Liquor Association of Oklahoma has approved legislation that would allow c-stores to sell strong beer and wine across the state, reported the Tulsa World. The proposal would also allow liquor stores to sell “single-strength refrigerated beer.”
“What it means is maybe—just maybe—prohibition is going to be over in Oklahoma,” said Mike Thornbrugh, spokesman for QuikTrip.
Voters would have to approve the state constitutional change, which will not take place until the 2016 election cycle.
“It’s a win for the consumer because they will get to pick where they buy beer,” said Thornbrugh. “It’s a big win for the liquor stores because now they are going to have refrigeration.”
It has been a long fight for c-stores, but after the opposition from liquor stores faded away due to their own aspirations for refrigerated beer, it seems like it will all come down to Oklahoma voters.
