Cepsa’s CEO positions Spain as key player for green hydrogen
Maarten Wetselaar spoke about the huge potential for green hydrogen production at the World Hydrogen 2023 Summit & Exhibition.
Maarten Wetselaar, CEO of Cepsa, has participated in the World Hydrogen 2023 Summit & Exhibition to position Spain as the European country with the best conditions to lead the production of green hydrogen.
"I have a great passion that I know is shared by all of you: hydrogen. We want hydrogen to win. The world needs hydrogen to win. We all know that the threat of climate change means only one thing: the world has to start using cleaner energy,” said the Wetselaar.
During his speech, he highlighted Cepsa's commitment to hydrogen, with the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley, the largest hydrogen project presented to date in Europe. In addition to decarbonizing industry and heavy transport in Spain, the project will bring green hydrogen to northern Europe, thanks to the first green hydrogen corridor connecting southern and northern Europe through the Port of Rotterdam and Cepsa's agreement with ACE Terminal.
"In terms of green hydrogen, Spain and the Iberian Peninsula in general now have a great opportunity. First, because we have a lot of green electrons. The Peninsula has huge solar, wind, biomass and hydroelectric resources, spread over a wide geographical area and connected by an ultra-modern, meshed grid. This means that we have the cheapest green hydrogen in the EU, the cheapest green ammonia and the cheapest green methanol. The second reason is that Spain already has enough domestic demand to get the industry going,” he explained.
Wetselaar also highlighted the existing port infrastructure for exports, as well as advanced supply plans to supply other EU countries. The company recently announced the first purchasing agreement outside Spain, with GETEC, to supply green hydrogen to industrial customers in Europe.
More than 10,000 delegates from over 100 countries gathered from May 9 to 11 in the city of Rotterdam (The Netherlands) to participate in the World Hydrogen 2023 Summit & Exhibition.
