China: Alibaba keeps rural expansion going with 100 more ‘Taobao’
Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group continues to revitalize rural retail development by helping villages set up Taobao service stations.
According to Anhui News, Alibaba has recently teamed up with Feidong County, a county located in the eastern province of Anhui, to build 100 Taobao stations.
A Taobao is a store where consumers can shop online and pick up goods that were ordered online, something that is very important for villagers as most courier services refuse to deliver to far-flung towns.
Aside from making buying and consumption easier, Taobaos also aim to encourage the locals to sell their produce online, which would further develop e-commerce in the rural areas.
Feidong County is currently seeking business partners among rural youths, college graduates, and returning migrant workers.
