EG Group to reintroduce car washes in the UK
New anti-slavery legislation has meant a large decrease in the number of hand car wash sites, making the automatic car wash business attractive again.
Britain’s EG Group has begun reintroducing car wash services onto its forecourts due to favourable legislation changes, reports the Lancashire Telegraph.
Ilyas Munshi, commercial director at EG Group, revealed that the UK’s second biggest petrol station operator is bringing back automatic car washes after legislation was passed to clamp down on hand car washes.
As previously reported by PetrolPlaza, the hand car wash business suffered from lack of compliance and included modern slavery behaviours. The Responsible Car Wash Scheme was developed in 2018 to tackle these issues.
“Changes in terms of anti-slavery legislation meant a lot of hand car wash businesses closed down overnight, so there was a vacuum in terms of people being able to wash their cars,” said Munshi in a Forecourt Trader webinar.
With more favourable market conditions, EG Group is now reintroducing rollovers and jet washes back onto its sites. The company looks at markets such as Germany as examples to follow for a successful car wash business.
