Eneos and automakers unite to showcase synthetic fuel vehicles
Companies will exhibit at the Expo 2025 Osaka to highlight the viability of carbon-neutral internal combustion engines using synthetic fuel.
Six major Japanese companies (Eneos, Suzuki, Subaru, Daihatsu, Toyota, and Mazda) have announced a joint initiative to deploy vehicles powered by synthetic fuel during the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan.
These vehicles will be used to transport guests and personnel within the event venue throughout the Expo period. Backed by the Green Innovation Fund of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), the initiative will highlight the potential of synthetic fuel as a transitional solution toward carbon neutrality for internal combustion engine vehicles.
The synthetic fuel, produced at ENEOS's demonstration plant completed in September 2024, is formulated to operate similarly to gasoline and has been tested for compatibility by all participating manufacturers.
Toyota and Mazda will supply vehicles for guest transport, while Suzuki, Subaru, and Daihatsu will provide vehicles for staff and related party mobility.
The fuel itself is created using hydrogen sourced from renewable energy and captured CO₂, making it a cleaner alternative that can reduce emissions over its lifecycle. Importantly, as a liquid fuel, it can leverage existing fuel infrastructure.
The companies aim to use this demonstration to underscore the ongoing role of engine-powered vehicles in the broader shift to carbon neutrality.
