Estonia: Eesti Gaas to start selling biomethane next year
Two Estonian energy-related companies have partner to begin the sale of biomethane in Estonia’s fuel market.
Natural gas distributor Eesti Gaas and Rohegaas OU have entered into a cooperation contract that will see Eesti Gaas buy around 11 million m3 of biomethane over the two next years to sell at CNG stations, reports the Baltic Times.
“I am very glad that in the new year we will start the sales of biomethane or green gas in all our compressed gas stations," a member of the board of Eesti Gaas, Raul Kotov, said in a press release.
Currently seven stations, plus one in Tallin by the end of 2017, will be able to distribute biomethane to Estonian users. Eesti Gaas is planning for more retailing points in Rakvere, Viljandi and Johvi in 2018.
Rohegaas OU will supply the “green gas” through a new biomethane production unit in Kunda which will start operating next year.
"Eesti Gaas makes its business decisions in an environmentally conscious manner and based on the fact that Estonia has assumed the responsibility of covering at least 10 percent of the fuel used in transport with fuel from renewable sources by 2020, a third of which would be biomethane,” explained Kotov.
Biomethane is a green fuel produced from biogas – a gas formed by methane and carbon dioxide. Natural gas is classified as fossil fuel, whereas biomethane is defined as a green source of energy.
