Fastned unveils first highway-based ultra-fast charging station in Germany
New site on the A40 marks a key milestone in Fastned’s mission to build 1,000 stations across Europe.
Dutch charging network Fastned has celebrated the opening of its first ultra-fast charging station located directly on a German autobahn (highway), launching the site at the Neufelder Heide-Süd rest area on the A40. The opening ceremony took place in partnership with the Autobahn GmbH des Bundes, the federal motorway authority.
This latest station includes six 400 kW charging points, offering fast charging for electric vehicle (EV) drivers. Positioned between Duisburg and the Dutch border, the site is ideally located for both commuters and travelers heading across Germany or toward the Netherlands.
“Fastned grew up along Dutch motorways, so we’re especially proud to now open our first charging station on a German autobahn,” said Linda Boll, Country Director of Fastned Germany. “Together with Autobahn GmbH, we’re bringing ultra-fast charging exactly where it’s needed: directly on the motorway.”
The Neufelder Heide-Süd site is part of Germany’s “Deutschlandnetz” initiative, a national program to expand EV infrastructure. Under the initiative, 200 new ultra-fast charging locations will be built along major transport corridors, with Fastned responsible for 34 of them.
With operations in nine European countries, Fastned is steadily expanding its footprint across the continent. In Germany alone, the company already operates 43 ultra-fast charging stations, with plans to open up to 20 additional sites by the end of 2025, both within and beyond the Deutschlandnetz framework.
