Gas station explosion leaves 7 dead in Ghana
A gas station explosion in Ghana has caused outrage among people as seven died and dozens were injured last Saturday.
Ghana’s government has promised to tighten security measures at service stations after the deadly explosion took place in the Legon area of Accra. A tanker truck carrying natural gas caught fire triggering explosions in a liquefied natural gas filling station and a nearby Total petrol station, sending huge fireballs up in the sky.
The government announced seven people had died and 132 were injured in a statement released the following day, reports the Daily Mail.
Citizens of Ghana and Accra are livid at authorities and retailers as this is the eighth gas explosion in four years. In 2015, the city of Accra already suffered a lethal explosion at a petrol station that left 150 people dead.
“I have asked the Vice President to go back to Accra to see with his own eyes, and that of the Minister for Interior, what has taken place. We are going to have to come out with a clear policy on how to prevent such incidents in the future,” said President Nana Akufo-Addo in a church gathering, according to The Statesman.
Local citizens have denounced the fact that too many natural gas filling stations are located near petrol stations, increasing the danger of deadly explosions.
