Greggs pilots ‘Express’ self-service format at MFG forecourts
The trial introduces compact, grab-and-go units tailored to on-the-move customer demand.
Greggs has launched a trial of its new self-service “Greggs Express” concept, marking a step into automated food retail within forecourt environments. The first unit has been installed at an Motor Fuel Group-operated service station at Glasgow Airport in Paisley, offering a compact, grab-and-go format for customers.
The Greggs Express unit features a selection of the brand’s core products, including savoury bakes, sweet items and Fairtrade hot drinks, designed to meet demand for quick and convenient food options. The format is aimed at high-traffic locations where speed, efficiency and minimal staffing are key factors.
The trial will expand to a small number of additional MFG forecourt sites in the coming months, allowing both companies to evaluate customer behaviour and operational performance. The initiative is part of the retailer's broader strategy to diversify its retail formats while continuing to scale its footprint.
MFG highlighted the alignment of the concept with changing consumer expectations in forecourt retail. Jamie Constable, Head of Operations – Food Service at MFG, noted that the self-service model is well suited to customers seeking fast, on-the-go solutions during refuelling stops.
The pilot reflects a wider shift in the convenience retail sector toward automated and space-efficient formats, particularly in forecourts where operators are looking to maximize throughput and enhance the customer experience without increasing operational complexity.
