H2Accelerate urges EU to support hydrogen refueling deployment
The entity is requesting further support to meet the European Commission’s 2030 CO2 targets.
The H2Accelerate collaboration has published its latest policy paper, highlighting the actions and support needed from the European Union (EU) to meet CO2 targets set by the European Commission.
Updated HDV CO2 targets require a 45% reduction in the greenhouse gas emissions from heavy-duty vehicles by 2030, compared to 2019 levels. Although the entity has recognised policymakers’ efforts to achieve this, mainly the Renewable Energy Directive (REO), it has declared that “uncertainty on the long-term business case is currently impeding the long-term large-scale investments needed.”
H2Accelerate’s recent Policy Paper outlines critical measures that the European Commission must undertake to meet the 2030 target. These include funding the joint development of hydrogen refueling stations and hydrogen trucks, as well as coordinating the geographic distribution of hydrogen refueling and production infrastructure.
The paper emphasizes the need to establish certainty regarding the availability of renewable hydrogen for mobility through the European Hydrogen Bank (EHB) and RED mandates.
Additionally, it calls for member states to implement measures that ensure a competitive total cost of ownership for hydrogen trucks compared to diesel trucks, potentially through a carbon tax or RED credits for green hydrogen. The paper also stresses the importance of committing to existing policy and regulatory frameworks, ensuring they align with decarbonization targets.
H2Accelerate comprises Daimler Truck, Iveco, Volvo, and hydrogen suppliers such as Shell, Linde, TotalEnergies, bp, and, most recently, TEAL Mobility.
