Hit and run in Calgary fuel station leads to calls for special “pay before” law
A fuel station operator in Calgary is asking regional authorities to enact new legislation which would force customers to “pay before” refueling after one consumer who was trying to escape to avoid paying the fuel charges run over and injured a fuel station attendant, Canadian media CBC News reported on June 8.
The hit-and-run occurred as an employee of the location, owned by Centex, was trying to keep a driver of a Ford pick-up truck from running away. A 35-year old woman who was working in the station was pulled by the vehicle for 45 feet, according to the report.
Centex Petroleum President Alnoor Bhura told CBC Nees that gas theft occurs every day in Alberta and the company's policy is for employees to just call police.
"The Government of Alberta has shown very little or no leadership in this matter in the past, even though they have been advised by various chiefs of police to adopt 'pay before pump' legislation," said Bhura, according to CBC News.
