India approves E100 fuel to enable ethanol-only vehicles
New framework supports flex-fuel cars and bikes while reducing oil import dependence.
India has approved a regulatory framework for 100% ethanol (E100) fuel, enabling the development and deployment of vehicles powered entirely by ethanol. Announced by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, the move establishes a legal basis for automakers, fuel retailers and testing agencies to advance ethanol-based mobility solutions.
The decision marks a significant expansion beyond India’s ongoing ethanol-blending program, which has focused on increasing ethanol content in petrol and is approaching nationwide E20 adoption. By introducing E100 regulations, the government is opening a new pathway for flex-fuel vehicles designed to operate exclusively on ethanol.
The regulatory clarity is expected to accelerate investment in ethanol-compatible engines and fuel systems, building on earlier pilot projects. The policy also aligns with broader efforts to diversify India’s transport energy mix, alongside electric, CNG, hybrid and hydrogen technologies.
The rollout of E100 could reshape the country’s fuel landscape by expanding biofuel use, supporting agricultural supply chains and reducing exposure to global oil price volatility.
