Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and HPCL to install 22,000 EV stations in India
After nearly doubling the number of charging sites, the Power Ministry of the country announced the new expansion in its most populated cities.
Last Saturday, the Power Ministry of India released a statement regarding the current number and future expansion of EV charging stations. In the last four months, sites have expanded by 2.5 times throughout nine of its most important cities, such as Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. In addition, the Government announced that Indian oil companies will be installing a total of 22,000 new public stations across the country.
According to the statement published by the local news site India Times, a total of 678 public EV charging stations were installed between October 2021 and January 2022 in nine cities across India. There are currently near 940 public chargers located in Surat, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennaiof the total 1,640 in the region.
In addition, oil companies have announced that they will be installing up to 22,000 EV charging stations in these cities and on national highways. Out of the total number, 10,000 will be installed by Indian Oil, 7,000 by Bharat Petroleum Corporation and the remaining 5,000 will be installed by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation.
The government has signed a number of associations with private and public agencies to enhance public charging infrastructure. Private organizations have invested as well in the development of convenient charging network grid to gain consumers’ confidence across the country.
The public office aims to expand stations into other cities after the saturation of EV infrastructure in the previously mentioned cities, which currently have a population of over 4 million citizens.
