Japan: EV chargers outnumber gas stations
Japanese carmaker Nissan Motor Co. reported that there are now 40,000 charging points in Japan surpassing the country’s 34,000 gas stations.
The East Asian country, moreover, has 6,469 CHAdeMO DC rapid chargers, which are far more than the 3,028 installed in the whole of Europe or 1,686 found in the United States, according to digitaltrends.com.
Nissan’s figures, however, included privately-owned electric vehicle (EV) chargers.
But for Nissan chief financial officer Joseph G. Peter, wrote The Japan Times, what is important is the continued expansion of charging infrastructure in the country, which will address EV users’ ‘range anxiety’ and provide support to Nissan’s electric vehicles, LEAF and e-NV200.
The increase in EV chargers, projected to reach 2 million by 2020, can be attributed to the Japanese government’s aggressive tax breaks and generous subsidies amounting to as much as 3 million yen ($27,937).
