Neste’s renewable diesel enables net-zero at Helsinki Airport
Milestone underscores the growing role of sustainable fuels in aviation ground services.
Neste has played a central role in helping Finavia’s Helsinki Airport reach net-zero carbon emissions in its own operations, marking a significant sustainability milestone for Finland’s main air travel hub.
Since 2024, Neste’s 100% waste- and residue-based renewable diesel has been used to power machinery and emergency generators at Helsinki Airport, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 90% compared to fossil diesel over the fuel's life cycle. This has earned the airport net-zero certification from the international Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program.
Machinery operations account for 80% of Finavia’s fuel use and represent a segment where electrification is not yet viable. Neste’s drop-in renewable diesel allows the continued use of existing heavy-duty equipment without modification, offering an immediate and scalable decarbonization solution.
“Finavia has been a forerunner in decarbonizing airport operations. We hope their success inspires broader adoption of renewable fuels in industries facing similar infrastructure and power challenges,” said Joni Pihlström, Vice President of B2B Sales at Neste.
Finavia, which has maintained carbon-neutral operations across all 20 of its airports since 2019, is extending the use of Neste MY Renewable Diesel to all of its airports by the end of 2025.
