Netherlands: Shell’s third LNG station opens for heavy trucks
Shell has opened a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) refuelling station in the western port area of Amsterdam to supply LNG to heavy duty truck fleet operators.
According to NGV Global News, the Amsterdam pump is Shell’s third LNG station launched in the Netherlands this year as the oil and gas giant had already opened its first two stations in Rotterdam and Waalwijk, in March and April respectively.
Shell saw an increasing demand for LNG among fleet owners because it is more cost-efficient and cleaner than traditional diesel.
The refuelling site in Amsterdam has a capacity of 70,000 litres of LNG, sufficient to fuel around 200 trucks per day.
The multinational company will also have access to import and storage capacity in the Gas Access to Europe Terminal (Gate), which will supply its refuelling network in the Netherlands.
There are plans to open additional sites in the country, according to Lauran Wetemans, General Manager Downstream LNG.
“We expect LNG will form a bigger part of the sustainable transport fuel mix in the future,” Wetemans added.
LNG forming a bigger part of the sustainable fuel mix is in line with the EU Clean Power for Transport directive, Dutch government fuel vision report, and the Social-Economic Council vision report to a sustainable fuel mix in the Netherlands.
