NIO launches fifth-generation battery swap stations in seven cities
The new infrastructure supports NIO, Onvo and Firefly vehicles on a single network, marking the opening of battery swap services to the company's small-car brand.
NIO has launched its first fifth-generation battery swap stations across seven Chinese cities, introducing a new platform that enables vehicles from its NIO, Onvo and Firefly brands to use the same battery swapping network.
The initial rollout covers Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Suzhou, Hefei, Chengdu and Quanzhou. The station opened in Quanzhou, Fujian province, is also NIO’s 4,000th battery swap station in China and the first site equipped with the company’s fifth-generation technology.
According to NIO, the new stations use an in-house developed swapping platform capable of adjusting configurations in real time to locate battery fastening points. The system supports vehicles with wheelbases of up to 3.5 meters, allowing compatibility with a broader range of models, from compact cars to large SUVs.
The upgrade also brings Firefly, NIO’s small-car brand, into the battery swap ecosystem for the first time. Previous generations of swap stations could not accommodate Firefly models because of their shorter wheelbase.
The company also announced that cumulative battery swap services surpassed 120 million, just six months after reaching the 100 million mark.
NIO had built more than 9,100 charging and battery swap facilities across China, including over 4,000 swap stations. The network includes more than 1,000 stations located along highways and currently serves over 550 cities.
