Sheetz hits milestone with opening of 800th store

The next few years are expected to bring more openings across Michigan and the Midwest.

Sheetz will reach a landmark moment this week as the company opens its 800th store on Thursday, August 28, in Raleigh, North Carolina. What began as a single family-run location in Pennsylvania more than 70 years ago has grown into one of the country’s most ambitious convenience retailers, blending fuel, food, and retail in a format that continues to expand across multiple states.

The Raleigh opening will be marked with a community celebration, including local donations and giveaways, while Sheetz extends the milestone to every one of its stores with a promotion running through Labor Day weekend: two free hot dogs with any purchase from August 28 to September 2. The timing coincides with one of the busiest travel periods of the year, placing the chain squarely in the path of customers on the move.

Beyond expansion, Sheetz has worked to define itself as more than a fuel stop. Stores offer made-to-order meals, drive-throughs, sit-down dining areas, and grocery-style assortments, alongside features like free Wi-Fi, air pumps, and consistently modern facilities.

Cultural touchpoints add to the story. Earlier this year, the chain’s made-to-order menu was voted the “Coolest Thing Made in Pennsylvania,” a tongue-in-cheek but telling win against iconic products like Crayola Crayons. It reflects the way Sheetz has cultivated not just customers but a loyal following—what it calls “Sheetz Freakz”—even as it scales far beyond its roots.

As Raleigh welcomes store number 800, Sheetz is already looking toward the 1,000 mark. The next few years are expected to bring more openings across Michigan and the Midwest, while the company works to maintain the culture, menu innovation, and service model that have fueled its rise.
